Respighi

Japanese: レスピーギ
Respighi
Italian composer. He studied violin and viola at the music school in his hometown of Bologna, and composition under G. Martucci (1856-1909) and others. In 1900, he became a viola player at the Imperial Opera House in St. Petersburg, and studied orchestration under Rimsky-Korsakov. In 1913, he became professor of composition at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, where he worked for the rest of his life, including as director from 1924 to 1926. He established a reputation for his colorful orchestral works, such as Fountains of Rome (1916), Pines of Rome (1924), a trilogy of symphonic poems, The Festivals of Rome (1928), premiered by Toscanini, and the ballet music, The Shop of Odd Things (1919, choreography by L. Massine), commissioned by Diaghilev. He became Italy's most internationally known orchestral composer in the first half of the 20th century. He later deepened his interest in Italy's musical heritage, leaving behind works such as the Gregorian Chant Concerto for violin and string orchestra (1921), arrangements of music by Monteverdi and Frescobaldi, and operas and songs. → Casella / H.
