Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women

(Common name for the "Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women") A treaty that has as its basic principle the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women, and calls on contracting parties to take appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination in political, economic, and social activities. It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1979 and came into force in 1981. Japan ratified it in 1985. Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.
[Additional information] At the United Nations General Assembly in 1999, the Optional Protocol was adopted, which provides for an individual complaints system under which individuals or groups whose rights under the Convention have been violated and who are unable to receive redress within their own country can directly seek redress from the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, and it came into force in 2000. Japan has not ratified the Optional Protocol, citing concerns that it may cause problems with the independence of the judicial power and the domestic judicial system.

《「女子に対するあらゆる形態の差別の撤廃に関する条約」の通称》女子に対するあらゆる差別の撤廃を基本理念とし、政治的・経済的・社会的活動などにおける差別を撤廃するために締約国が適切な措置をとることを求める条約。1979年の国連総会で採択され、1981年に発効。日本は昭和60年（1985）に批准した。女性差別撤廃条約。
[補説]1999年の国連総会で、同条約に定められた権利を侵害され、国内で救済を受けられない個人または集団が、国連の女子差別撤廃委員会に直接救済を求めることができる個人通報制度などについて規定した選択議定書が採択され、2000年に発効した。日本は、司法権の独立および国内の司法制度との間において問題を生じる懸念があるとして、選択議定書は批准していない。
