Godetia - Godetia

Japanese: ゴデチア - ごでちあ
Godetia - Godetia

A general term for the Onagraceae family (APG classification: Onagraceae), including the species of the genus Nightshade. It is common in western North America, especially in California, and about 20 species are known. It is an annual plant similar to evening primrose. The stems are upright and 30-70 cm tall. The leaves are alternate and oblong. In May and June, numerous large, four-petaled flowers are produced in linear or raceme inflorescences at the top of the stem. Flowers come in a variety of colors, including red, peach, purple, orange, and white. Hybrids have been produced using the amoena species C. amoena (Lehm.) A.Nelson et JFMacbr. ( G. amoena Lilja) and the grandiflora species C. amoena subsp. lindleyi ( G. grandiflora Lindl.) as the main parents, and many horticultural products are known. There are dwarf and tall species, the dwarf species being used for flower beds and the tall species being used for cut flowers.

In warm areas, sow seeds in mid- to late September and transplant in mid- to late October at 20cm intervals, or direct sow in October. In cooler areas, direct sow in early spring. Do not over-fertilize.
