?‐601 King of the Visigothic Kingdom, established in the Iberian Peninsula in the early 6th century. Reigned 586-601. He assisted his father, King Leowigild, in unifying the peninsula, and after his experiences during this time he converted from Arianism to Catholicism the year after his accession to the throne. Two years later, in 589, he convened the Third Council of Toledo and proclaimed the conversion of the Visigothic Kingdom to Catholicism. Although there was an Arian rebellion in response, it was easily put down. This conversion removed the biggest obstacle between the Visigothic kingship and the inhabitants of the peninsula, and the Visigothic Kingdom developed into a real state.
