King of the Visigothic Kingdom, established in the Iberian Peninsula in the early 6th century. Reigned 586-601. He assisted his father, King Leowigild, in unifying the peninsula, and after his experiences during this time he converted from Arianism to Catholicism the year after his accession to the throne. Two years later, in 589, he convened the Third Council of Toledo and proclaimed the conversion of the Visigothic Kingdom to Catholicism. Although there was an Arian rebellion in response, it was easily put down. This conversion removed the biggest obstacle between the Visigothic kingship and the inhabitants of the peninsula, and the Visigothic Kingdom developed into a real state.

6世紀初頭，イベリア半島に成立した西ゴート王国の王。在位586‐601年。父レオウィギルド王の半島統一政策を助け，この間の体験から即位の翌年アリウス派からカトリックに改宗，さらに2年後の589年には第3回トレド会議を開いて，西ゴート王国のカトリック改宗を宣言した。これに対してアリウス派の反乱はあったものの，容易に平定された。この改宗によって従来西ゴート王権と半島住民の間にあった最大の障害が取り除かれ，西ゴート王国は実体を伴った国家へと発展していった。
