Hennebique, F. (English spelling) HennebiqueF

… When steel frames were still mainly made of cast iron, fire resistance was a problem, so concrete was introduced as a way to reinforce them, and eventually reinforced concrete structures based on this became the mainstream in factory buildings. In France, François Hennebique (1842-1921) conducted pioneering research, and built the prototype of modern factory architecture with reinforced concrete columns, beams, and floors and large windows in the spinning mill at Tourcoing (1895). The first reinforced concrete factory in the United States to use the Hennebique method was built in 1898 by Ernest Leslie Ransome. …

From Pele

…The apartment building he built on the Rue Francois in Paris (1903) was designed by him and constructed by his own company, and is known as the first building to be made entirely of reinforced concrete. His technique was a large-scale practical application of the concrete construction method that had been developed by structural engineer François Hennebique (1842-1921) and architect Anatole de Baudot (1834-1915), from the standpoint of functionality and economy, and it set the course for new architectural trends in the 20th century. He continued his architectural work energetically until his death, and his major works include the Theatre des Champs-Élysées in Paris (1913), the Church of Notre-Dame de Le Raincy in the suburbs of Paris (1923), the National Furniture Warehouse (1934), and Marseille Airport (1947). …
