Rensoushou

Japanese:
Rensoushou

Korean novelist. Born in Seoul. He came to Japan in 1912 and entered Azabu Junior High School. After graduating from Kyoto Prefectural Junior High School, he went on to Keio University's Faculty of Letters, but was imprisoned in 1919 for participating in the March 1st Independence Movement. After dropping out and returning to Korea, he worked as a reporter for the Dong-A Ilbo and Dongmyeong (weekly), and even went to Manchuria (northeastern China) for a time. His career as a writer began in 1921 with "A Frog in the Specimen Room" (published in Kaibyaku), and this short story, his debut work, left a clear mark on literary history as it analyzed the anxiety, distress, and impatience of a young man in a transitional period and beautifully depicted it with a naturalistic touch. He continued to write energetically even after liberation, and received numerous awards, including the Seoul City Culture Award in 1953 and the Republic of Korea Cultural Medal.
