An annual plant of the legume family (illustration) with a strong fragrance. It grows 40-60 cm tall, with an erect stem that may be sparsely hairy. The leaves are alternate and trifoliate, with broad lanceolate leaflets 2-3 cm long. One or two flowers appear in the leaf axils in summer; they are white and then pale yellow. The fruit is an oblong, cylindrical legume with a long, pointed, curved tip, 6-15 cm long. The seeds are ovoid. It is believed to have originated in Southwest Asia, and grows wild in western India. It is cultivated from the Mediterranean region to India, where the young legumes are eaten. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
