Following Japan's victory in the Russo-Japanese War, the Imperial Korean government was forced to sign this treaty on November 17, 1905. It is also known as the Second Japan-Korea Treaty or the Eulsa Protectorate Treaty. As a result of this treaty, Korea became a Japanese protectorate and lost its status as an independent country in the international community. To achieve this, the Japanese government took active steps, first obtaining support from both the United States and Great Britain for Japan's rule over Korea (the Katsura-Taft Agreement in July 1905, and the Second Anglo-Japanese Alliance Treaty in August of the same year). This was truly imperialist diplomacy. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
