Belgium is a multi-ethnic nation made up of two ethnic groups, the Germanic Flemish (Flemish people) and the Latinized Celtic Walloons (Wallon people), but it does not have a federal system like Switzerland or Canada. Originally, the area of ​​present-day Belgium was inhabited by Latinized Celts, but Germanic peoples migrated from the north and east between the end of the Roman Empire and the 10th century, and the linguistic border that runs almost east-west from Mouscron in West Flanders to Lanaye in Liège has remained almost unchanged since then (Figure).
