Sokushinran - Sokushinran

Japanese: ソクシンラン - そくしんらん
Sokushinran - Sokushinran
A perennial plant of the lily family (illustration), commonly found in bright grasslands at the foot of mountains and along roadsides. The flower stalk is densely covered with curly white hairs, giving it a powdery appearance. The flower stalk is 10-30 cm tall, and emerges from among the many linear leaves growing at the base of the plant. The Japanese name, "Tsokushinran," is said to be derived from the fact that the flower stalk emerges from the center of a bunch of leaves. Many flowers grow in spikes, and the tepals are 2-3 mm long, with six of them joining together to form a tube. Like the stems, the flower stalk is densely covered with curly hairs. The roots are used medicinally and are said to be effective in relieving coughs.
