Lubumbashi - Lubumbashi (English spelling)

The capital of Katanga Province in the southeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire), in central Africa. It is located on a plateau at an altitude of 1,230 meters. Until 1966, it was called Elisabethville, named after the Queen of Belgium. With a population of 851,381 (1994), it is the second largest city in the country. It developed early as the central city of the Katanga region, which is rich in mineral resources such as copper ore, and has a large copper refinery as well as industries such as tobacco, beer, and flour milling. It is connected by rail to Port Franchi (now Ilebo) and the Kananga area. It is also connected to Angola via the mining towns of Kolwezi and Diloro. It also has an international airport. The city retains the beautiful urban landscape built during the colonial period, and is full of cultural facilities such as a branch campus of the national university, museums, Catholic churches, Jewish churches, and Islamic mosques. Swahili, which was introduced from East Africa, is also widely spoken in this region.
