Dyeing - Somemono

Japanese:
Dyeing - Somemono
Textiles dyed with dyes. They are broadly divided into pre-dyed (sakizome) fabrics, in which the threads are dyed before they are woven, and post-dyed (atozome) fabrics, in which the woven fabric is dyed. Each type can be divided into plain dyes and patterned dyes. Patterned dyes include kakizome, stencil dyes, and surizome, which add color to the fabric to create shapes, and shibori, itajime shibori, and batik dyes, which use resist dyeing methods to prevent the dye from staining certain parts of the fabric. Often, both types are used together. In Japan, kakie, surizome, and koukechi, kyoukechi, and batik dyes, which correspond to shibori, itajime shibori, and batik dyes, remain among the dyed and woven textiles preserved in the Shosoin Repository. Tsujigahana dyeing, which mainly used shibori, was practiced from the Muromachi to Momoyama periods. During the Edo period, dyeing techniques made great strides, with the development of sophisticated shibori such as Hikita-shibori, stencil dyeing such as komon and chugata, and the creation of the revolutionary Yuzen dyeing technique, which led to the development of unique and colorful patterns.
