This is the law of refraction of light. It was first proposed by W. Snell in 1621. This law applies not only to light but also to general waves. When a wave enters an isotropic medium and refracts into another isotropic medium, the plane of incidence (the plane containing the direction of the incident wave and the normal to the boundary surface) and the plane of refraction (the plane containing the direction of the refracted wave and the normal to the boundary surface) are on the same plane, and if the angle of incidence is i and the angle of refraction is r , then they are related by sin i / sin r = n (constant), where n is the refractive index of the refracting medium with respect to the incident medium.
