A village in Senboku District, central Akita Prefecture. Population 6,274 (1995). Located in the Hinokinai River basin, a tributary of the Tama River, most of the village area is made up of the forests and plains of the Dewa Mountains. The southern part is an alluvial lowland that occupies the northern end of the Yokote Basin, and the eastern part faces Lake Tazawa. The village was once known as a producer of firewood, charcoal, and horses, and had many small mines. Today, the village produces timber, wild vegetables, and other materials. The Ani Highway, which runs from the Hinokinai River valley through Daikakuno Pass to the Ani region, was a transport route for goods to the Ani mines in the early modern period, but it has fallen out of use as a major transportation route since the mines declined.
