Ruprecht

Ruprecht
A legendary figure who visits children on Christmas or St. Nicholas' Day (December 6th) wearing a whip, a sack, and furs. Of course, the whip is used to punish children, and the sack is used to deliver gifts. In ancient times, he was used to frighten children like an evil spirit, but around the time of the Reformation, he seems to have become both strict and kind. He has many local nicknames, but is generally called "Servant Precht" and is a servant of Nicholas. However, he is sometimes identified with the so-called Santa Claus and is also said to be an attendant of the baby Jesus.
