A class of Arthropoda that includes 11 orders, such as spiders, scorpions, mites, crabs, and harvestmen. It is also called the class Arachnida or simply Arachnida. The body consists of a prosomal and posterior soma, and the prosomal has six pairs of appendages. The first pair of appendages are chelicerae, the second pair are palps, and the remaining four pairs are walking legs. The circulatory system is open. The diet is basically carnivorous. The mouthparts are relatively simple, and food is liquefied and aspirated. The central nervous system, consisting of the brain and subesophageal nerve sphere, is concentrated in the prosomal soma, and the body surface and appendages have ocelli, sensory hairs, and receptors for chemical substances.
