A chieftain of Izumo who appears in a series of stories about Yamato Takeru no Mikoto (Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, Yamato Takeru no Mikoto in the Nihon Shoki) in the Kojiki. On his way back to the capital from a western expedition, he fell victim to a scheme by Yamato Takeru, and was forced to fight Yamato Takeru, who had a real sword, with a fake sword (a wooden sword), and met a tragic end. Of the major regions mentioned in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, the only ones with chieftains called Takeru were Kyushu (Kumaso) and Izumo, and both were destroyed by Yamato Takeru, which shows that at a certain point in the formation of the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki tales, Izumo, along with Kyushu, was considered an area that the Yamato court had to conquer. This is probably in line with the fact that the myth of the transfer of the country in the Age of the Gods was conceived with Izumo as the setting.
