1619‐90 A leading painter and decorator at the French Academy. Also spelled Lebrun. Born in Paris. Trained in Boué's workshop, he went to Rome in 1642 to study under Poussin. It is said that the theories he learned there later became the foundation of French Academism. He also learned the techniques of Baroque decoration from Pietro da Cortona and others. He returned to Paris in 1646 and the following year submitted an altarpiece for Notre Dame Cathedral, which became a success, and he became a central figure at the Academie Royale de Peinture et Sculpture, which was founded in 1648.
