A tributary of the Kiso River that flows south through the Minami-Hida region of Gifu Prefecture. Its length is 148 km, and its total drainage area is 2,165 km2. It originates in Takane Village, Masuda County, at the southern foot of Mt. Norikura, and flows westward, joining the Nuno River and Akigami River, before changing direction to the south in Kugino Town, where it joins the Kosaka River in Kosaka Town, the Takehara River in Gero Town, the Maze River in Kanayama Town, the Shirakawa River in Shirakawa Town, Kamo County, and the Kabuchi River in Hichiso Town, before joining the Kiso River in Kobi Town, Minokamo City. 岐阜県の南飛驒地方を南流する木曾川の支流。流路延長148km,全流域面積2165km2。乗鞍岳の南麓,益田(ました)郡高根村に源を発し,布川,秋神川を合わせて西に流れ,久々野町で方向を南に変え,小坂町で小坂川,下呂(げろ)町で竹原川,金山町で馬瀬(まぜ)川,加茂郡白川町で白川,七宗(ひちそう)町で神淵(かぶち)川などを合わせ,美濃加茂市古井(こび)町で木曾川に合流する。上流から金山町までをかつては益田川と呼んだ。
