An American conductor and composer of Russian origin. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory. He first made a name for himself as a double bass player, and later served as a professor of double bass at his alma mater. He made his debut as a conductor in 1908, conducting the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. After the Russian Revolution, he was based in Paris, and from 1921 to 1924 he led the Concertos Koussevitzky, which performed Russian operas and other contemporary works. He moved to the United States in 1924, and served as the principal conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1924 to 1949. He also established the Koussevitzky Music Foundation in 1942, and commissioned many composers to write new works. Even before the foundation was established, he commissioned works such as Roussel's Symphony No. 3, Stravinsky's Symphony of Poems, Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra, Britten's opera Peter Grimes, two symphonies by Honegger, as well as many other masterpieces by Copland, Hindemith, Martinu, and others. Ravel's orchestral version of Pictures at an Exhibition was also written at his request. He obtained US citizenship in 1941. His own works include the Double Bass Concerto (1904). →Bernstein→Related topics Double bass | St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra | Takemitsu Toru | Harris | Munch Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
