Koussevitzky
An American conductor and composer of Russian origin. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory. He first made a name for himself as a double bass player, and later served as a professor of double bass at his alma mater. He made his debut as a conductor in 1908, conducting the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. After the Russian Revolution, he was based in Paris, and from 1921 to 1924 he led the Concertos Koussevitzky, which performed Russian operas and other contemporary works. He moved to the United States in 1924, and served as the principal conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1924 to 1949. He also established the Koussevitzky Music Foundation in 1942, and commissioned many composers to write new works. Even before the foundation was established, he commissioned works such as Roussel's Symphony No. 3, Stravinsky's Symphony of Poems, Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra, Britten's opera Peter Grimes, two symphonies by Honegger, as well as many other masterpieces by Copland, Hindemith, Martinu, and others. Ravel's orchestral version of Pictures at an Exhibition was also written at his request. He obtained US citizenship in 1941. ロシア出身の米国の指揮者,作曲家。モスクワ音楽院に学ぶ。はじめコントラバス奏者として名をなし,母校でもコントラバスの教授を務めた。1908年ベルリン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団を振って指揮者としてデビュー。ロシア革命後はパリを拠点に活動し,1921年−1924年〈コンセール・クーセビツキー〉を率いてロシア・オペラや同時代の作品を演奏。1924年渡米し,1924年−1949年ボストン交響楽団の常任指揮者として活躍した。また1942年クーセビツキー音楽財団を設立し,多くの作曲家に新作を依頼。財団設立以前も含め,彼の委嘱によりルーセルの《交響曲第3番》,ストラビンスキーの《詩編交響曲》,バルトークの《管弦楽のための協奏曲》,ブリテンのオペラ《ピーター・グライムズ》,オネゲルの2つの交響曲ほか,コープランド,ヒンデミット,マルティヌーなどの数多くの名曲が誕生している。《展覧会の絵》のラベルによる管弦楽版も,その依頼によって書かれた。1941年米国市民権を取得。自身の作品に《コントラバス協奏曲》(1904年)など。→バーンスタイン
