A city in the Caltanissetta province of Sicily, southern Italy. Population 74,789 (1981). Founded in 688 BC as the Greek colony of Gela. Gelon, tyrant of Syracuse (5th century BC), transferred much of Gela's population to Syracuse. At the Council of Gela in 424 BC, the Greek colonies of the whole island of Sicily declared independence. It fell into disuse in the Middle Ages, but was rebuilt by Frederick II in the 13th century and named Terranova. It has had its current name since 1927. During World War II, it was the base for the Allied forces' landing in Sicily. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
