Melos is a volcanic island in the Cyclades group of the Aegean Sea. Its ancient name was Melos. It is known for producing high-quality obsidian. Since the 7th century BC, sculpture and pottery have been actively produced on the island, and the Archaic kouros statues, the large vases with unique decorations known as the "Melos Amphorae," and the large number of unglazed reliefs produced in the 5th century BC occupy a unique place in the history of Greek art. The marble statue of Aphrodite, known as the "Venus de Milo" (2nd century BC, Louvre Museum), discovered in 1820, is a testament to the sculptural activity on the island during the Hellenistic period.
