A former town in Shiranuka District, eastern Hokkaido. It occupies the southern part of the Shiranuka Hills, faces the Pacific Ocean to the south, and is served by the Nemuro Main Line. Dairy farming and forestry are its main industries. In October 2005, it was incorporated into Akan Town, Akan District, and Kushiro City. Area: 401.37 km2 . Population: 2,878 (2003).
