A Kabuki play. A domestic drama. Five acts. Written by Tsuruya Namboku IV and Sakurada Jisuke II. Commonly known as "The Daughter of the Honcho Thread Shop." It was first performed in January 1810 (Bunka 7) at the Ichimuraza Theater in Edo by Onoe Kikugorou III, Iwai Hanshiro V, and Matsumoto Koshiro V. The story of the thread shop's daughter, which has long been sung in folk songs, is adapted to incorporate a love story between Koito and Sasichi. The play depicts parallel stories of the turmoil caused by Ofusa, the beautiful daughter of a thread shop owner, her lover Honjo Tsunagoro, and the villainous Hanki Kurobee and his wife Oji, as well as the relationship between a construction worker called Omatsuri Sanshichi and a geisha Koito whose relationship is torn apart by the woman's affectations, leading to Sanshichi's murder of Koito. Features typical of Nanboku include the scene where Ofusa, who has been rendered lifeless by poisoned alcohol, comes back to life in a coffin in the cemetery, and the technique of quickly changing Ofusa and Oji into Hanshiro at the samurai house where Kurobee blackmails Tsunagoro. The play was discontinued, but was revived in the Showa era by Sawamura Tosshi VIII, Kawarazaki Chojuro and Kunitaro of Zenshinza, each with a different revised script. The story of Sazane has become popular through its retelling by the third Kawatake Shinshichi, in the form of Edo Sodachi Gosai Sazane.
