The capital of Western Sahara (formerly Spanish Sahara) in northern Africa. It is also called El Aioun. Population 93,875 (1982). It is an oasis city on the Atlantic coast near the northern border with Morocco, facing the Canary Islands. It was a fishing base, but in 1963, a phosphate mine 100 km inland at Bukra, one of the world's largest in quality and reserves, was developed and it became an ore shipping port. Minerals are transported from Bukra to the port by conveyor belt, and the port has facilities that allow 100,000-ton ore carriers to dock alongside for loading and unloading.
