Rufinus, Tyrannius
Born: circa 345. Concordia, near Aquileia
[Died] 410/411. Christian bishop, translator, and writer near Messina. He studied in Rome, became friends with Jerome, and became a monk at Aquileia at the age of 20. In 373 he traveled to Egypt and learned the theology of Origen. In 378 he went to Palestine, founded a monastery, and became a priest. In the early 390s he became embroiled in a controversy over Origen and came into fierce conflict with Jerome. After publishing a Latin translation of Origen's Elements in 397, the controversy flared up again, and he was summoned by the Pope to write the Apologia. He also translated Greek theological works into Latin, including Origen's Bible commentaries and sermons, sermons by Basil and Gregory of Nyssa, and Eusebius' Ecclesiastical History.

[Died] November 27, 395. Chancellor to the Roman Emperor Arcadius of Constantinople. A Gaul. The former emperor Theodosius I appointed Rufinus as the first guardian of his son Arcadius, but he soon came into conflict with F. Stilicus, a commander of the Western Roman army who was also the guardian of his other son, Honorius. Rufinus attempted to strengthen his position by marrying his only daughter to Arcadius, but was thwarted and killed by Stilicus' troops sent to Constantinople.

ローマ皇帝アルカディウスの宰相。ガリア人。先帝テオドシウス1世がルフィヌスを息子アルカディウスの第1の後見人として指名したが,まもなくもう1人の息子ホノリウスの後見人とされた西ローマ軍の司令官 F.スチリコと対立。ルフィヌスはひとり娘をアルカディウスにとつがせてみずからの地位を強化しようとしたが妨げられ,コンスタンチノープルに派遣されたスチリコの軍隊によって殺された。
