Horikawa, located in Nishi-ku, Osaka City. It was one of the canals newly constructed as part of the urban reconstruction project following the Winter and Summer Sieges of Osaka. It was excavated in 1617 (Genwa 3) on the south side of the Tosabori River, which runs parallel to Nakanoshima, linking the Nishiyokobori River and the Kizu River. Storehouses of various feudal domains and wholesalers from various provinces were concentrated on both banks, and various goods were gathered from faraway lands, creating a bustling town befitting a "city of water." The western end of this Horikawa, between Kyomachibori and the Zakoba, was where the fish market, one of Osaka's three major markets, was located, and large quantities of fresh fish were imported not only from the Seto Inland Sea but also from as far away as Kyushu.
