World Culture

Japanese:
World Culture

An anti-war and anti-fascist art, thought, and cultural information magazine. It was launched in February 1935 (Showa 10) in Kyoto by Nakai Masakazu, Shinmura Takeshi, Mashita Shinichi, Wada Yoichi, Kuno Osamu, Tomioka Masugoro, and others as a successor to Bi-hihyo (Bi-hihyo), and published 34 issues by October 1937. It had a circulation of 500-800. It was notable for its systematic introduction of overseas anti-fascist movements, and for the members themselves trying to promote the movement as intellectuals. However, the editorial policy was deemed to be a "people's front cultural movement" in line with the new policy of the 7th Congress of Comintern, and the members were arrested on November 8, 1937 for violating the Peace Preservation Law, and Nakai, Shinmura, and six others were indicted. After being detained in detention centers and pretrial detention centers for around two years, they were found guilty between 1939 and 1940, but all of them were released because their sentences were suspended.
