During the Edo period, Edo became a major consumer city with the establishment of the Edo shogunate and the alternate attendance system. As the industries in the surrounding areas were underdeveloped and Edo relied on supplies from the Kansai region, this shipping route developed significantly and regular ships such as the Hishigaki Kaisen and Taru Kaisen began operating.
