A city in the northeast of the Greater Manchester region in the north-central part of England. It is part of the Rochdale district. It is located about 20km north-northeast of Manchester, at the foot of the western Pennines, facing the confluence of the Spodon and Rochdale rivers. The town developed as the center of the cotton textile industry in the 18th and 19th centuries, and is known for its thriving textile industries, including cotton textiles, woolen textiles, and rayon. It also manufactures machinery and electrical products. It is known as the birthplace of the cooperative movement, and in 1844 the Rochdale Fair Pioneers' Society was founded by the city's spinners (→ Consumer Cooperative Society). This was the first successful consumer cooperative, and the original shop has been preserved. Area: 160km2 . Area population: 206,500 (2004 estimate). City population: 95,796 (2001).
