[Died] June 28, 1991. French philosopher. He studied philosophy at the University of Paris, and became a Marxist in the 1930s and participated in the anti-fascist movement. After World War II, he served as a researcher at the National Institute of Scientific Research (1949-61), a professor of sociology at the University of Strasbourg (1961-65), and a professor at the University of Paris (1965-73). Although he also studied Descartes and Diderot, his main field was Marxist philosophy, and he wrote prolifically not only on the history of ideas but also on aesthetics and sociology. His major works include Dialectical Materialism (Le Materialism dialectique) (1939), The Thoughts of Karl Marx (La Pensée de Karl Marx) (1947), Critique of Everyday Life (Critique of Everyday Life) (1958), The Sum and Surplus (La Somme et le Reste) (1959), The History of the Commune (La Proclamation de la Commune) (1965), and Language and Society (Le Langage et la société) (1966).

[Died] August 28, 1959. Hauts-de-Seine, Boulogne-Billancourt. French historian. While teaching in Flanders and Paris, he engaged in research into the history of revolution, and in 1924 published his doctoral thesis Les Paysans du Nord pendant la Révolution française (The Peasants of the Nord Department under the French Revolution). After graduating from the universities of Clermont-Ferrand (1924) and Strasbourg (28), he was professor at the University of Paris from 1935 to 1945. In 1932, he became the chairman of the Robespierre Study Group. His major works include La Révolution française (History of the French Revolution) (30), Quatre-vingt-neuf (39), and Études sur la révolution française (Studies of the French Revolution) (54), in which he developed a theory of compound revolutions.

Lefèvre (Le Fèvre), Jean

Born: circa 1396, Abbeville
[Died] 1468. Bruges. French chronicler and herald. Lord of Saint-Remy, he served as the head of the Order of the Golden Fleece under Philip, Duke of Burgundy, and later became a duke's advisor and was involved in foreign negotiations in various regions. He wrote the Chronique (1408-36), which mainly records the founding of the Order of the Golden Fleece.

French critic and journalist. He served as editor-in-chief of the magazine Nouvelle Littéraire from 1922 onwards. In addition to Une heure avec (An Hour of Conversation) (7 volumes, 1924-33), he published other works, including Conversations with Paul Valéry (26).
