Sanyo Expressway - Sanyo Expressway

Japanese: 山陽自動車道 - さんようじどうしゃどう
Sanyo Expressway - Sanyo Expressway

This expressway runs from the Hanshin region to the Sanyo region. It is managed by West Nippon Expressway Company. From its starting point in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, to Kobe City, it overlaps with the Chugoku Expressway, passing through Okayama City, Mihara City in Hiroshima Prefecture, Hiroshima City, and Iwakuni City in Yamaguchi Prefecture, before connecting to the Chugoku Expressway in Yamaguchi City, passing through Ube City in Yamaguchi Prefecture and ending in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The total length is 489 km, with six lanes between Okayama City and Kurashiki City in Okayama Prefecture (temporarily four lanes), and four lanes elsewhere. Along the way, it connects to the Chugoku Expressway Himeji-Tottori Line in Tatsuno City, Hyogo Prefecture, the Okayama-Yonago Line in Okayama City, the Onomichi-Matsue Line in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, and the Hiroshima-Hamada Line in Hiroshima City. This road relieves congestion on the parallel National Route 2 and becomes the main artery of transportation in the Sanyo region. It also connects to the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge, and serves as a conduit for automobile traffic between Honshu and Shikoku to various regions of Honshu. It connects to the Kobe-Naruto Route (Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway) at the Kobe Nishi Interchange, the Kojima-Sakaiide Route (Setouchi Chuo Expressway) at the Hayashima Interchange, and the Onomichi-Imabari Route (West Seto Expressway) at the Fukuyama Nishi Interchange.

As of March 2011, a total of 445 kilometers of the section between Kobe and Hatsukaichi in Hiroshima Prefecture, between Otake in Hiroshima Prefecture and Yamaguchi City, and between Ube and Shimonoseki City have been opened to traffic. The remaining sections are also used as expressways (managed by West Nippon Expressway Co., Ltd. and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism).
