A city located on the eastern coast of the base of the Izu Peninsula in eastern Shizuoka Prefecture. It includes Hatsushima Island off the coast. It was incorporated as a city in 1937. The central city area facing the Sagami Bay is the largest hot spring city in Japan, and in 1950 it was designated an international hot spring cultural city. Atami Onsen (weak saline springs, gypsum springs, etc., 50°C) has hundreds of springs, and a large hot spring town is formed with a concentration of inns, villas, and resorts. It is also a base for tourism in Izu, with the Tokaido Shinkansen main line running through it, the Ito Line branching off from it, and connecting it to the Izu Skyline. In addition to the Omiya Pine, named after the Golden Demon, the plum garden with about 750 plum trees, Nishikigaura with its cliffs stretching for about 2km, and Jukoku Pass, there are hot springs such as Izuyama, Ajiro, and Taga. Area : 61.78 km2. Population: 39,611 (2010).
