Painted Goryeo

Japanese: 絵高麗 - えこうらい

〘Noun〙 (also "Egorai") A type of pottery. A type of pottery from the Chinese Jizhou kiln series, with a colored base decorated with white clay and simple designs and patterns painted in black and brown paint. During the Edo period, this was called "pottery from Goryeo." At the time, it referred to pottery made in Korea during the Yi Dynasty, but in recent years, the term has been used to refer to pottery from Jizhou kilns, represented by those made in Jizhou County in northern China, as this type of pottery is the same type. *Wakan Shodogu Kenchisho (1673-81) - Goryeo ware type: "E-Goryeo. The Kan'ei Tekanji says that it is 300 years old, made of blue earthenware and has various patterns, so it is called E-Goryeo."

〘名〙 (「えごうらい」とも) 焼物の一つ。有色の素地を白泥土で化粧し、黒、褐色の絵の具で絵や文様が簡素に描かれた中国磁州窯系のもの。江戸時代、「高麗わたりの焼物」の意で称したもの。当時は李朝時代の朝鮮産をさしたが、近年は中国華北磁県産によって代表される磁州窯の類が同種なので、これにも用いられる。※和漢諸道具見知鈔（1673‐81）高麗焼物之類「絵高麗。寛永手鑑にいはく、三百年之物、地薬青き物にていろいろ紋有、よって絵高麗と云也」
