Rupert's Land

The general term for the area in the northern half of North America that was the property of the Hudson's Bay Company from 1670 to 1869. Named after the first Governor of the Company, Lord Rupert, it was never surveyed, but is said to have included the Ungava region, the Red River basin, the coast of Hudson Bay, and the South and North Saskatchewan river basins. The Hudson's Bay Company was given a monopoly on trade in this territory, but with the establishment of the Dominion of Canada in 1867, negotiations began and the territory was handed over peacefully between the company and the Canadian government, but the inhabitants of the Red River Colony launched a resistance movement.
