Nanterre - Nanterre (English spelling)

It is the capital of the Hauts-de-Seine department in north-central France. It has a population of 84,281 (1999). It is located 5 km west-northwest of Paris, on the left bank of the Seine. It is an industrial satellite city of Paris, with thriving industries in machinery (especially automobiles), food, and chemicals. It is also a university town, home to the former University of Paris Nanterre (Faculty of Letters) and the current University of Paris 10. It is the birthplace of Sainte-Geneviève, the patron saint of Paris. Parts of the city are undergoing major transformation due to the urban redevelopment of the La Défense district.
