A military leader of the Royalists during the Puritan Revolution in England. Born in Prague as the third son of Elizabeth, daughter of James I, and Frederick V, Elector of the Palatinate. He was involved in the Thirty Years' War and lived a wandering life, during which he acquired military skills. He returned to England when the English Civil War broke out, and helped his uncle Charles I fight against the Parliamentary forces, becoming famous as an excellent cavalry commander in particular. In 1644, he was appointed commander-in-chief of the Royal Army, but the following year, he was defeated by Cromwell at the Battle of Marston Moor, and was dismissed for being held responsible for the defeat. After being exiled, he led a small fleet against the Republican Navy, and lived as a fugitive in the West Indies and other places. He returned to England when the Monarchy was restored in 1660. In rebuilding the navy, he fought in two wars against the Dutch, and served as Lord Admiral of the Sea (1673-1679).

英国，ピューリタン革命期の国王派の軍事指導者。ジェームズ１世の娘エリザベスとファルツ選帝侯フリードリヒ５世の第３子としてプラハに生まれる。三十年戦争に巻き込まれ，流浪の生活を送ったが，その間に軍事技術を身につけた。英国の内乱勃発によって帰国し，叔父チャールズ１世を助けて議会軍と戦い，とくに騎兵の優れた指揮官として名をあげ，1644年国王軍総司令官に任じられたが，翌年マーストン・ムーアの戦でクロムウェルに敗れ，敗戦の責任を問われて解任された。国外追放になった後は，小艦隊を率いて共和国海軍と戦い，西インド諸島などに逃亡生活を送った。1660年の王政復古により帰国。海軍の再建にあたり，２度の対オランダ戦争を戦い，海軍卿を務めた（1673年−1679年）。
