A Bantu farming people living in the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa. Other tribes that speak Luba languages include the Lulua, Lunda, Song'ge, and Yake. As they form a large linguistic group, Luba (Thiruba) is adopted as the national language of the Democratic Republic of the Congo along with Lingala, Swahili, and Kongo. Even in the political turmoil following the independence of Congo (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) in 1960, the Luba formed a major political force. The Luba are divided into three groups: the Kasai Luba, the Shaba Luba, and the Hemba Luba. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
