A group of merchants who engaged in privileged trading of silk fabrics, among various types of clothing, in the Middle Ages. The existence of light goods za (traditional Japanese za) can already be traced to the temple town of Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine in 1303 (Kagen 1) at the end of the Kamakura period, in front of the gates of Katori Shrine in Shimousa during the Muromachi period, and in the Sengoku period to the wealthy merchant Tachibanaya of Kitanosho in Echizen. The light goods za (traditional Japanese za) in the temple town of Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine are recorded as being among the za-za merchants who provided labor for the repair of Suruga Sammai-do Hall in the grounds of Hachimangu Shrine. In return for this burden, they were guaranteed privileged rights to trade in silk fabrics within the temple town or in the manor land under the control of Hachimangu Shrine.
