Essays from the late Edo period. 12 volumes, 1 appendix. Written by Kitamura Intei (Tokinobu). Preface dated 1830. This can be called an encyclopedia of Edo period customs, categorizing topics into 27 categories ranging from "residences" (buildings, gardens, ornaments, etc.), "appearance" (hairstyles, makeup, etc.), "clothing" (clothing, accessories, etc.) to "plants and trees." It provides detailed explanations on over 4,000 items, citing a wide range of Japanese, Chinese, and ancient/modern literature, but has no illustrations. As the appendix is titled "A Wakumon Appendix," it is written in the form of answers to questions, and consists of 196 miscellaneous items. In the preface, the author himself writes that he regretted leaving behind the scattered scraps of notes he had made over the years, and so he systematically organized and transcribed them, which is what makes this book stand out. The descriptions tend to be biased towards the town of Edo, and reflecting the author's quirky personality, there are also many insulting passages, but it is no exaggeration to say that his attitude of "using old books as evidence" and his vigorous intellectual curiosity make this the best book for learning about Edo customs.
