The body is cylindrical and elongated, with a mouth at the front and an anus at the back, and is divided into many segments of roughly the same size. Most are around 10 cm long and have 100 to 200 segments, but there are very small ones such as Chaetogaster annandalei of the Lumbicidae family, which is 0.44 mm long and 0.13 mm wide, and huge ones such as Megascolides australis of the Pheretidae family, which can grow up to 2.2 m long. The head does not have sensory organs such as tentacles or eyes, and each segment has fine setae in four bundles or lined up around the body.
