A musician and theater artist from the Meiji and Taisho periods. His real name was Togi Sueyoshi, a musician at Shitennoji Temple in Osaka. In 1870, he moved to Tokyo with his father. He began serving at the Imperial Court in 1889, learning and performing gagaku and European music, and worked there until 1905. During that time, he studied literature at the Tokyo Senmon Gakko (Waseda University) and the German Studies Association School (Dokkyo University). Having absorbed ancient ethnic culture and modern Western culture, his interest shifted to theater. From around 1900, he was active in the Recitation Method Research Society and the Eifu-kai, which led him to join Shoyo Tsubouchi's Literary Arts Association, where he played Shylock in "The Merchant of Venice." His acting was described as bold and unconventional, with a freshness that was unconventional. In 1904, he composed the opera "Tokoyami." He also entered the world of opera. In October 1905, on the 25th anniversary of the founding of Waseda University, he composed the school song "Miyako no Seihoku." The lively melody was a pioneer in the composition of school and dormitory songs. He also participated in the new school theater of Ii Yoho, Kawai Takeo, and Kitamura Rokuro, playing the role of Lieutenant General Kataoka in "Hototogisu", and in 1922 he was active in new theater in Osaka, and the following year he returned to Tokyo and took charge of directing at the New Theater Research Institute. In his later years he was absorbed in the study of Japanese music history, and from 1910 he serialized "Considerations on Japanese Music History" in the magazine "Ongakukai". Unfortunately, this was interrupted by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923. However, he played a pioneering role, devoting his passion to both the practice and research of music and theater until just before his death. <References> Kitami Jiichi, "The Iron Flute and the Spring Dawn"
