King of the Franks and Western Roman Emperor (reigned 814-840). Also known as Louis I. Son of Charlemagne. Known as the Pious (Ludwig der Fromme, Louis le Pieux), he became co-ruler during his father's lifetime. He was a devout believer but politically incompetent. In 817, he divided the empire among his three sons, including Lothair I. In 829, he divided the empire again for his second wife's son Charles (later Charles II). This caused a civil war between his former sons, and he was temporarily dethroned (833-835).

フランク王国国王，西ローマ皇帝（在位814年―840年）。ルイ１世とも。カール大帝の子。敬虔(けいけん)王（Ludwig der Fromme，Louis le Pieux）と呼ばれ，父の存命中に共同統治者となった。篤信だったが政治上は無能。817年帝国をロタール１世ら３子に分割。829年第２妃の子カール（後のカール２世）のために帝国を再分割。このため前子らとの間に内乱が起こり，一時廃位（833年―835年）された。
