King of the Franks and Western Roman Emperor (reigned 814-840). Also known as Louis I. Son of Charlemagne. Known as the Pious (Ludwig der Fromme, Louis le Pieux), he became co-ruler during his father's lifetime. He was a devout believer but politically incompetent. In 817, he divided the empire among his three sons, including Lothair I. In 829, he divided the empire again for his second wife's son Charles (later Charles II). This caused a civil war between his former sons, and he was temporarily dethroned (833-835). → Related articles Carolingian dynasty | Heliant | Treaty of Verdun | Lothar I Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
