Izumo Highway

Japanese: 出雲街道 - いずもかいどう

A highway connecting Izumo Province with various parts of the Sanyo region. It was the route for pilgrimages to Izumo Taisha Shrine and for travelling up to Kyoto from Izumo. It generally refers to the road that starts in Kyoto, passes through Himeji, Kozuki, Emi, and Tsuyama, crosses the Yojimagari Pass, and reaches Izumo from the valley of the Hino River. In the past, the road that passed through Harima and Inaba, the road that went to Izumo by sea from Tottori, and the road that went to Izumo from Onomichi via Miyoshi were all called Izumo Kaido. In the early modern period, the road that passed through the Yojimagari Pass was used as a route for the feudal lords of Izumo and Iwami to travel to Edo on their alternate attendance routes. Nowadays, both are national highways.

出雲の国と山陽地方各地を結ぶ街道。出雲大社への参詣や出雲からの上洛の道であった。一般に京都を起点とし，姫路，上月，江見，津山を経て四十曲峠を越え日野川の谷から出雲にいたる道をいう。古くは播磨から因幡に抜け，鳥取から海路出雲へ出る道，尾道から三次を経て出雲に出る道もそれぞれ出雲街道と呼ばれた。近世に入って四十曲峠を通る街道は出雲，石見の諸大名の参勤交代路とされた。現在ではそれぞれ国道となっている。
