...This was done to avoid any problems for Ryozei, who was his senior and a leading figure, if he were to be criticized by the Shogunate, by ignoring the Shogunate's restrictions on publishing. Genpaku had published Kaitai Yakuzu (3 anatomical illustrations and 2 chapters of text) the previous year, which served as a preview of this work and a test of the Shogunate's restrictions, and in the case of this work as well, he took every precaution, such as dedicating copies to important members of the Shogunate and the Imperial Court prior to publication. The difficulties he faced in translating this work are recorded, with some fiction, in Genpaku's memoir Rangaku Koto Hajime....
