The fourth king of Bavaria (reigned 1864-1886). He is the protagonist of Mori Ogai's "Utakata no Ki" and Visconti's "Ludwig: Twilight of the Gods." He is known as an enthusiastic supporter of Wagner (the construction of the Bayreuth Festival Theater was supported by the king) and a castle-building fanatic (Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee, etc.). The reason for his death shortly after he was declared incompetent is unclear, with two theories being that it was murder by Prussia or suicide.

バイエルン王国第４代国王（在位1864年―1886年）。森鴎外《うたかたの記》やビスコンティ監督《ルートウィヒ――神々の黄昏(たそがれ)》の主人公。ワーグナーの熱狂的庇護者（バイロイト祝祭劇場建設は王の後援による），築城マニア（ノイシュバンシュタイン，リンダーホーフ，ヘレンキームゼーなど）として知られる。禁治産宣言を受けた直後の死にも，プロイセンによる謀殺あるいは自殺の２説があって定かでない。
