Latin poet of late antiquity. Date of birth and death unknown. Full name Rutilius Claudius Namatianus. A Roman aristocrat, probably from Toulouse in Gaul, he was well versed in grammar, rhetoric, and Greek. Although a pagan, he served as chief secretary (412) and prefect of Rome (414) under the reign of Emperor Honorius. At the end of September 417, he left Rome and returned home by sea to rebuild his own territory in Gaul, which had been ravaged by the Germanic peoples. Two volumes of travel poems remain that describe this journey in a refined elegiac form, but the beginning of the first volume has been lost and the second volume ends at just 68 lines.
