...It has been pointed out that the growing fiscal deficit and the equally increasing tax burden made the people anxious. However, an analysis of the direction of the votes suggests that it was not the ÖVP, the opposing opposition party, that eroded the SPÖ's votes, but rather that the votes of the party's left-wing supporters went to two organizations equivalent to the West German Green Party at the time, namely the Vereinigte Grünen Österreichs (VGÖ) and the Alternative Liste Österreichs (ALÖ). However, although both organizations were thought to be sure to enter the parliament before the general election, they only received 1.93% and 1.36% of the votes respectively, and neither party was able to enter the parliament. ...
