French chronicler and poet. Much about his childhood is unknown, but he is thought to have been educated to become a priest. He began his creative career around 1360, visiting the courts of royalty and nobility in England, France, Italy, and other countries. He left behind many poems, as well as the prose Chroniques (4 volumes), which succinctly describes the feudal aristocratic societies of France and England from 1325 to 1400, and the situation during the Hundred Years' War, which he observed with a strong desire for knowledge and extraordinary curiosity.

フランスの年代記作者，詩人。幼少時は不明な点も多いが，聖職者になるための教育を受けたらしい。 1360年頃から創作活動に入り，イギリス，フランス，イタリアなどの王侯貴族の宮廷を歴訪。旺盛な知識欲と並みはずれた好奇心で観察した 1325～1400年のフランス，イギリスなどの封建貴族社会や百年戦争の状況などを簡潔に記した散文の『年代記』 Chroniques (4巻) のほか，多くの詩作品を残した。
