...Because the wood is hard and difficult to break, it is used for hammer handles and sickle handles, hence the name Kamatsuka (sickle handle). It is also called Ushikoroshi or Ushi no Hanagi, because it is used to make holes in the noses of cows to put ropes through, and also for nose rings. The young shoots and ripe fruits are edible, and are sometimes used as bonsai or garden trees.
